We have developed a unique App KRTS Power to Respond®.  It has two main functions:

Firstly to support individuals immediately after a challenging incident by helping them to understand their emotional reactions, offering strategies and, if necessary, pointing them in the direction of further support.

Secondly to offer information for helpers, friends, colleagues, managers or family members, providing information on what to do and, just as importantly, what not to do to support those affected.

What prompted you to develop it?

We all encounter crises and trauma throughout our lives. And we all respond differently depending on numerous factors.  It is also true that significant incidents can come in many shapes and sizes and can be anything that is, usually, unexpected, and overwhelms a person’s normal coping resources. This can include accidents, physical and/or verbal assaults, relationship breakdown, bereavement and loss, or the diagnosis of an illness for you or someone close. It can also include acts of terror or natural disasters, and at those times, it is important to quickly reach many people with support and advice, whilst helping them to support each other. Based on our experience of working in the field of psychological distress, and feedback from clients and employers, it was regularly reported that people did not know where to get the right help from, what to expect when they got the help or feeling fear and/or embarrassment which was linked to many misconceptions. Additionally, helpers, friends, colleagues, managers or family members often didn’t know how to support people who had been through distressing experiences.

Our passion has always been to make sure that the right person gets the right support at the right time following a critical incident. We also want to address the stigma surrounding mental health and normalise reactions as opposed to medicalising them. We recognise that not one size fits all, so we wanted to provide an innovative way of filling that gap. 

Is it in production or use?

Yes and we are delighted to have just been shortlisted for the CIR Business Continuity Awards 2019 “Strategy through Partnership” for this particular product.

Who inspires you?

We have been really lucky to meet many inspirational people along the way, but the clients we have worked with over the years have been our biggest inspiration. It takes a lot of courage to face your fears and we feel privileged to share any part of that process.

What do you hope to achieve in developing this innovation?

When our world changes too quickly, we have to process that and assimilate the changes. If we don’t understand what is going on in our brains and bodies, then this can add to the distress we are already feeling. We wanted to draw on the decades of experience that we have in this field to offer a solution that we knew was grounded in tried and trusted research. We wanted it to be easily accessible for when it is needed, private, simple, engaging and effective. We wanted it to offer a choice of the things that people can do to regain some control, help themselves, and support other people around them. We also wanted it to be something that could be used as a standalone or as part of a continuum of care.
