Surgical Gloves

Leanvation

Leanvation have developed a range of innovative surgical gloves, focused on delivering performance improvements, clinical practice benefits and reduced allergy risk. Crucially, aware of the current financial pressures faced by both the NHS and other public sector health organisations across Europe, the product range offers huge efficiency benefits, with the potential to deliver significant cost savings. Formed as a result of a management break-out from the current market leader, Leanvation surgical gloves are typically up to three times softer than comparative surgical gloves. This dramatically aids sensitivity and control whilst reducing the risk of hospital acquired infection whilst minimising the threat of career threatening allergy to healthcare workers. Ll of which has been achieved without compromising the level of protection afforded to both operating theatre staff and, consequently, patients undergoing surgery.

What prompted you to develop it?

The product range was born as a result of an interaction with the manager of an operating theatre in The Netherlands. Rather than wishing to review a broader assortment of products, the theatre manager conveyed the market need to see manufacturers offering a narrower range of products with broader capabilities. Historically, the need to serve the requirements of a host of different surgical specialities, including orthopaedics, neurosurgery, vascular surgery etc, has resulted in hospitals stocking a huge number of different surgical gloves. This can typically amount to up to 200 different surgical glove products being held by a hospital at any one time. By utilising the latest material technology, Leanvation have been able to reduce the number of gloves required to service all surgical specialties to 3 products in 8 different sizes.

Is it in production or use?

Yes. A number of NHS Trusts across the UK have already chosen to adopt the use of Leanvation surgical gloves, with Liverpool Women’s NHS Trust having been one of the first adopters in the region.

Who inspires you?

Working with pioneering surgeons across both the UK and the world on a regular basis continues to be a great source of inspiration. Knowing that you are delivering products and technologies that can have real benefits for patient outcomes is hugely rewarding. Recently, Leanvation supported the fight against Ebola in West Africa by delivering huge numbers of surgical gloves to the region. Aware that aid workers were wearing surgical gloves for up to 8 hours per day meant that the comfort and protection benefits of Leanvation surgical gloves could make a real difference and save lives. Knowing that we were supporting the aid effort in such a direct capacity was hugely rewarding for the whole team.

What do you hope to achieve in developing this innovation?

A practice known as double gloving, whereby one surgical glove is worn beneath another, has long been established as a means to dramatically reduce the threat of hospital acquired infection as a result of 'needle-stick' injury. A recent study conducted by Leanvation has indicated that the number of reported cases of ’needle-stick injury’ are grossly conservative. Despite the proven benefits of double gloving, and the recommendation of bodies such as the Royal College of Surgeons that the practice be adopted by surgeons and theatre workers at all times, the practice is not widespread. This is a result of conventional surgical gloves being seen as typically too thick and stiff to allow double-gloving practice to be considered without sacrificing ‘feel’ and sensitivity, crucial to surgeons undertaking their work. As a result of the technology employed in Leanvation surgical gloves, donning two pairs can often feel like wearing a single pair of conventional surgical gloves. This will hopefully ensure that ‘double-gloving’ becomes more widespread, dramatically reducing the risk of hospital acquired infection.
